So who is this mysterious Mr Deshpande?
Not very well known outside Pune, Deshpande, 46, is a builder famous for several firsts in his hometown. His rise from a family of doctors to among the city’s most influential real-estate magnates is, in fact, like a saga out of a best-selling paperback.
Back in 1987, Deshpande, a 23-year-old son of a doctor and a social worker lived opposite Pune’s Law College.
A motor-racing enthusiast with a flair for rally driving, he became vice chairman of the Federation of Motor Sports in India, and founded Pune Automotive Racing Association.
