Shiva, who hails from Kannauj village in UP, was diagnosed with acute lymphoid leukaemia in November. A few days later, she lost her vision. But even as doctors at Adityajyot prepared to operate on her on Tuesday afternoon, the cherub regaled nurses with her recital of the Ramayana.

Shiva’s (see picture) troubles began with a viral fever in November last year. “We took her to the family doctor, but when the fever didn’t subside, he told us it could be malaria,” recalls SS Mishra, Shiva’s father, a teacher in Kannauj.
