Mother eloped, father abandoned, maid exploited her

A drunkard father. A mother who ran away with another man. This was just the beginning of the sordid tale of Asma, just 12 then.
After her father left her in the custody of the family’s domestic help, Bibijan, some two years ago, Asma was forced to roll 4,000 incense sticks a day. When she failed to do that, she was hit with a steel pipe — sometimes even on her private parts.
On Wednesday, the cleric of a mosque decided to come to her rescue after Asma’s neighbours in Nehrunagar, Tiptur, heard her screams and took her to a hospital.
