Courts give hope for Delhi's 14 lakh homeless
Thursday, 21st January 2010
At least 14 lakh homeless people in New Delhi, including women, children, infirm and ailing, who were housed in shelters demolished by the Sheila Dikshit government, may get some relief from the biting cold.
Following court rebuke, the government has identified 35 places where homeless people gather. The number of night shelters have reduced from 46 to 32 owing to the government’s beautification drive in the name of the Commonwealth Games.
Among the users of the night shelters are pushcart pullers, cycle-rickshaw pullers, tea-stall and dhaba workers and labourers of construction sites.
