India gives more subsidized food to poor families
Thursday, 21st January 2010
Faced with rising food prices, the government has decided to supply an additional 10 kg of wheat and rice to poor families over the next two months. This is above the 35 kg of wheat and rice supplied to BPL families.

There has been a sense of urgency in government after Congress made its concern apparent with party general secretary Rahul Gandhi revealing that he had discussed the matter with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The increase in PDS allocations will help the poor as it will reduce the additional foodgrains they have to purchase from the open market.
